Hack Nikon Firmware
Posted : admin On 04.01.2020

A question for the forum.1)Can/has/would/could/ does anyone know if it would be possible to hack or reverse engineer the Nikon firmware for say the cp5000 or cp995, etc.2) is there a flash reader like the BIOS flash readers that could read the current flash mem on a coo;pix through the USB port?3) can the firmware.bin file be disassembled into something useable?4) could one compare an old xx.bin with a new.bin to see how the changeswere made? This might be a way to fix some short commings that Nikon doesn't care toaddress.Let's explore the possibilities. Warren,While what you suggest is certainly POSSIBLE, the work involved is enormous! Even if you can find a pre-existing disassembler for whatever processor is used in the camera (anyone know which one it is?), it would take a SERIOUS amount of work to understand the code enough to be able to even attempt to modify it.Given what I get paid per hour, I could easily buy a Nikon D1X and a LOT of lenses, throw in the new Sigma Foveon camera with a full set of lenses and still have cash left over, for the amount of time I estimate it would take to do anything reasonable with the firmware starting from scratch. Now if you had access to the source. I've worked with firmware before, it's a much bigger job than just about anyone thinks. At the same time I can not believe that creating a firmware update is THAT hard! The bases are all there, it's just a matter of improving what's there already.
I am not a techno wiz but let's look at Minolta 7i update. How hard would it be to update the 5 as well? Hi Ed,You are certainly right about the time and effort being more than one person would want to take on.
I am suggesting that a couple hundred people colaborate to share the work. Inside knowledge does help, it might already be there in public domain.Did a search on 'firmware hacks' and found that cannon has been hacked and the exposure and flash settings have been modified amoung other things. There is an australian site that has firmware hacks to change the zone settings for every major DVD player made. Most MP3 player firmware has been hacked.

It's doable.I have been a loyal Nikon user for 30 years and will continue to be, but mabe it's time Nikon get a wake up and either fix their buggie firmware or the end users will.Warren.
