I've played Pathfinder consistently for a year now, and off and on I play 5th Edition as well. Something I've come to notice is that 5e has a ton of user tools available; apps, web pages, programs, etc.Pathfinder has.

4.2

Personally I can't stand Lone Wolf Development and their anti-consumer practices, and also they just seem outright rude to their customers from the time I've spent browsing their forums. I've tried to justify hero lab to myself multiple times, but between the price and the bad business practices I just can't.So as old as Pathfinder is and as popular as it is, let alone the OGL, you would think they'd have some meaningful competition. But near as I can tell they don't. Nothing I've found compares to 5e's Fifth Edition Character Sheet app by Walter Kammerer on the google play store, PC Gen is the closest thing to Hero Lab but has a clunky interface and, in my opinion, is incredibly difficult to add homebrew races or classes to.The highest quality electronic Pathfinder supplement seems to be Masterwork Tools and it's GUI leaves something to be desired.

Then there's Tabletop Giant which is FABULOUS and long overdue in my opinion, but still in beta and doesn't currently offer DM tools of any kind or Homebrew options of any kind. Not that I blame him, it's primary intent is as a PFS tool.So what is it about Pathfinder that there are no electronic supplements? Does Paizo have some kind of super strict agreement that discourages this? Does Lone Wolf Development aggressively attack anyone who tries to be competition?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. What anti-consumer practices are you referring to? What rudeness? (Genuinely curious.) The only thing I remember was the flap over the Army Builder trademark, which I think was mostly poor communication.I don't think Lone Wolf pushed anyone away. If anything I think many looked at PCGen/Hero Lab and said 'is it worth it to take the time to make something better than that.'

Also, there's a much larger breadth of things to support in PF vs. 5th, so it is more complicated to implement.

Another possiblity is if you're thinking of phone/tablet 'apps', PF kinda predates the surge of apps and PCGen/Hero lab/etc had a foothold already. Huh, I admit that I hadn't really thought about the fact that Pathfinder does pre-date the app surge, I concede that point. I'm still a little surprised there are no 'programs' except for Tabletop Giant. As for Lone Wolf Development, well for anti-consummerist;. I point immediately to their 'only 5 licenses and you have to pay us money for them' rule. In this day and age when so many people have multiple devices it just strikes me as a way to get more money out of people already paying you hundreds of dollars.

The second time I tried to talk myself into buying Hero Lab I stopped because there was no way for me to put everything I wanted into a cart and see the final price. You have to buy a license/pack first before it will even let you think about looking at buying other supplements, so there's no way to see how much I can get 'up front' until I've already sunk my money in. Maybe I'm a little suspicious of companies but I don't like anything that hides the 'real' price tag from me. This ties into the licenses, but if my computer dies, or I get a new motherboard and get it installed and get hero lab installed and then a week later it goes down because the board was bad, or any number of computer situations, I can't move that license for like six months(?). There has been luck moving licenses if you call or email them but that's more time than I should have to take out of my day to be able to use a program I already paid for. No pack or mufti-license options.

If they have such a problem with rpg groups 'sharing' licenses the useful answer isn't to completely deny any license sharing at all, the useful answer is to offer some form of group discount on the initial purchase, these people are still going to buy the books they want after the fact.I could keep going but these are the major ones that have actively discouraged me every time I try to justify buying their product. With more research I could come up with more, and will at request.Rudeness;. Maybe it's just me but the fact that they require all posts on their forums to be 'approved' first doesn't sit right with me straight up front. I admit I'm not finding the quotes I was thinking of on a cursory search. I may be remembering with bias but it seems like any time someone asks questions about licenses the responses are terse and rude in tone.More than anything, I'm surprised no one has looked at their policies and decided 'We can do better'. 'only 5 licenses and you have to pay us money for them'It seems the second one is free, thereafter $10 each.

But yeah, I have multiple devices too.no way for me to put everything I wanted into a cart and see the final priceI'm not sure what's going on here. Maybe because they work with many publishers and include one license with their product it is difficult to set up their cart prices? They have a pricing page.I can't move that license for like six months(?). There has been luck moving licenses. It does sorta suck, but I can understand that they need to make sure their automated tool to move licenses doesn't allow it to switch every week. 120 days (their site says 120 days) is a bit long, but if they are pretty quick at responding, I wouldn't not buy because of this.the useful answer is to offer some form of group discountThat could be unwieldy.

Do they occasionally run sales?require all posts on their forums to be 'approved'Could be a spam thing. Maybe after a few posts people are free to post.responses are terse and rude in tonePlaying devil's advocate, maybe they are busy and have canned answers for common questions that may seem quick/short/rude.I don't really have a stake, I make another couple of other software programs so I'm just curious what people want/expect regarding these issues. Honestly I find it to be quite the opposite.5e and other WoTC materials are notoriously difficult to find online without going through a pay-wall of some kind.Pathfinder information is easily accessible online and accordingly has a number of free utilities, sites, and tools available (though by nature of its open materials, are generally community-driven)The Roll20 Compendium lets you search for game features like feats and spells and drag them into the sheet. (you still have to structure the character build yourself, of course). They also have a mobile app that lets you control a character sheet, though it's not automated unless you make your own actions.(which is pretty simple)You have PCGen, which, while it's often behind on updates is a pretty solid platform for character building. I THINK it's been cross-platform for a while, but isn't designed for mobile. You generally create a character and export it to PDF or something similar. And a few websites like that have web-site based character builders, as well as online sheet management like mythweavers.comAnd then of course you have the FantasyGroundsPlease also keep in mind that Pathfinder is a VASTLY more complicated system than 5e.

There's a LOT more under the hood to program if you want to keep it usable for all situations. I mean, just look at the Rogue class, alone. There are 49 Archtypes, Rogue and Unchained Rogue variations, quite literally 1600+ feats to choose from, 119+ Rogue Talents (not even counting advanced talents), etc, etc. It's a HUGE undertaking to develop anything for Pathfinder. So, how long have you been working for tabletop giant?Seriously I have spent more money than may be prudent on herolab (including $10 a piece on bestiaries for certain familiars specifically for certain classes in not even playing). And I have very few issues. (A user interface update would be nice).

I've reported bugs that have been patched within weeks in some of the most obscure edge cases. And for most of the occult classes like the Kineticist of the medium the program is almost a requirement to play them. (Or would you really be turning up at the table with 7 sets of character sheets and dual pre-prepped spell lists?). I've never talked to LWDs tech department for obvious reasons of I won't buy the program, so maybe those people are excellent I don't know. I'm purely judging them based on their front end and it is not appealing to new customers.Aside from that what makes you say the program is 'required' for kineticist? Medium I can see but I'm paying a kineticist in a game currently and there aren't that many variables that I can see, but she is admittedly only level 3.

This is genuine curiosity, by the way, no judgment here.
